ANTIQUE BONE CHESS PIECES EARLY 1900S (UHLIG?).
SET OF WHITE & RED QUEENS SPARES. EXCELLENT COND.
FROM MY PERSONAL COLLECTION. SEE LAST PICTURE.
As you can see in the last picture, I have accumulated a sizeable collection of chess related items, which I have been selling recently. I no longer play much and my millennial sons have expressed no interest in the game.
These and other bone spares pieces that I am listing separately were all included as spares in a complete Uhlig set that I bought some 20 years ago. The original set did have paperwork indicating its provenance, but the spares – practically identical to the other pieces- did not. So I cannot say with 100% certainty that these spares are also made by the German Uhlig factory, which I believe was active for part of the 19th century and early 20th.
I was also told that similar bone pieces were produced in the US at that same time.
These pieces are in the a Staunton pattern, the easiest to match with an incomplete bone set, and best for actual playing. Some early bone chess pieces are in the fancy Beidermier and Barley corn style, which are basically decorative as they are unstable and difficult to identify on a board.
WHITE & RED QUEENS SPECIFICATIONS:
53mm high; 30mm base (approx.)
Queens have 7 screwable parts with threads. White queen shows the typical grain marks on the stem of aged natural bone.
To the best of my knowledge, the red dye is original. It has the right patina and I have not touched it in the 20 years since I bought the lot.
